I can only enter rooms in desktop mode

After a reformat etc. Almost fully up and running.
It seems that I can only enter rooms when VP3 is in desktop mode. If I use my old settings in full screen mode (1028 x 768 x 16), the screen is just blank, as if it's a firewall problem (which it isn't). There is no connecting screen at all.
Using desktop mode I can enter rooms and even change to full screen mode and it's ok.
It's only a problem when I enter when I am already in full screen mode.
Any ideas anyone?
